Description

Al Khor International School is an exceptionally well-resourced school with excellent facilities and managed by GEMS. It is owned by Qatar's national gas companies, RasGas and QatarGas, and provides education for children of employees and a limited number of Qataris who live in the area.

AKIS opened in September 1999, reaching its full complement of primary and secondary classes in 2006/7. A state-of-the-art Primary School for some 1700 children will be opening in the 2010/11 academic year. AKIS is located in a purpose-built community of some 9000 residents. Situated near the coast, amid landscaped gardens, it has excellent leisure facilities and high class accommodation.

AKIS is generously staffed by mainly UK qualified and experienced teachers, supported by highly competent Learning Assistants. There are also specialist departments to support SEN and EAL needs. There is an ongoing commitment on the part of the school to see that all staff receive continuous professional development to realise both their own and the school's aspirations.

AKIS focuses on providing high quality learning opportunities, incorporating an understanding of individual learning styles. It achieves high standards through a stimulating learning environment, a team of dedicated and professional teachers, and a strong partnership between home and school. Pupils are given every opportunity to pursue interests beyond the classroom and to develop into critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

The atmosphere of AKIS is welcoming and embracing, inspiring enthusiasm, self-confidence and intellectual curiosity. Internationalism is fostered throughout the school, and every pupil has the chance to nurture their talents, experience success and be happy.
